With a reputation built on sourcing & supplying only the best possible examples of important rare books in superior condition or of significant distinction through association or exceptional scarcity, Shapero Rare Books has worked hard to earn and maintain its current position as one of the preeminent specialist booksellers internationally.

From early days visiting Paris to take advantage of the burgeoning book trade there and supplying a hungry UK market with the spoils of his endeavours, Bernard Shapero has grown and nurtured the business, now operating out of a smart Georgian town house in Mayfair’s St George Street, aided & abetted by a team of experts with between them over 100 years’ experience in the book trade.

These include long-time stalwarts Lucinda Boyle and Julian Mackenzie, whose knowledge and experience of Travel and rare books generally helped advance the business exponentially, but more recent years also saw Shapero Rare Books expand into the Russian books and works on paper market with the recruitment of Pierre-Yves Guillemet and Yulia Fedorenko, as well as Hebraica & Judaica (admirably & ably represented by Bela Goldenberg Taieb) and Literature & Children’s Books, including Modern First Editions, looked after by Angus Robb alongside their most recent recruit Roddy Newlands. The business is also involved in the Modern and Contemporary prints world, via its gallery Shapero Modern, run by Tabitha Philpott-Kent.

Shapero Rare Books at Rare Books London

Shapero Rare Books will be exhibiting across all the antiquarian and rare books Fairs comprising Rare Books London in 2017, from the ABA’s monumental Olympia Book Fair to the convivial and perhaps more traditionally “bibliophiliac” non-association Fair organised by Etc Fairs taking place on Sunday 4th June, and look forward to rubbing shoulders with book buyers from across the broad range of collecting interests, backgrounds and budgets that these combined Fairs bring.

As Bernard himself notes: “Rare Books London has become a unique experience for book collectors and dealers alike, allowing for collectors to see and hold books with a value ranging from just a few pounds to hundreds of thousands of pounds; the talks, seminars and even the opportunity to lunch with as venerable a veteran of the trade as Robert Frew for only £25 all enrich and enhance the experience, making it one of the most important and glamourous global events in any bibliophile’s calendar. Shapero Rare Books love having the opportunity to meet all the book collectors who descend upon London at this time, as well as hopefully convincing a few of them of the merits of our stock…we also particularly like that it is right on our doorstep…”
