SUMMER FAIR HIGHLIGHTS — Michael Kemp

Michael Kemp will be exhibiting at our forthcoming fair, he will have the following on offer:

GREEN, Val and ROBERTS, James An Abridgment of Mr Pope’s Essay on Man. Illustrated with Notes, Critical, and Moral, extracted from other celebrated authors. Invented, drawn and engraved by Val. Green. [with] An Essay on Woman. Illustrated with Notes from Various Authors, engraved by J. Roberts.
Robert Sayer and M. Darby, 1769.
2 single folio sheets. c. 35 x 25 cm. Each with three horizontal creases and a little light surface wear, but clean and dark impressions.
A rare pair of satirical/allegorical literary/anatomical engravings featuring a half skeleton mirrored with a fully clothed character.
Seemingly not held by any major British institutions although the online catalogue of the Welcome Trust identifies prints with both titles; their copy of the ‘Woman’ differs from this one bearing a slightly different title “Life and death contrasted – or, an essay on woman” [Bowles and Carver, nd.];  a completely different engraving in the same style and attributed to V. Green, though not signed. This is a later later version on the same theme; Bowles and Carver were formed in 1793.
Worldcat lists the Pierpont Morgan library for ‘Man’ and Yale University for ‘Woman’ as the only international locations.
